Medium technical severity with no CISA KEV confirmation; remediate through the normal risk-based patch cycle unless local exposure raises the priority.

Fix not verifiedElectron is a framework for writing cross-platform desktop applications using JavaScript, HTML and CSS. Prior to versions 38.8.6, 39.8.1, 40.8.1, and 41.0.0, on macOS and Linux, apps that call app.requestSingleInstanceLock() were vulnerable to an out-of-bounds heap read when parsing a crafted second-instance message. Leaked memory could be delivered to the app's second-instance event handler. This issue is limited to processes running as the same user as the Electron app. Apps that do not call app.requestSingleInstanceLock() are not affected. Windows is not affected by this issue. This issue has been patched in versions 38.8.6, 39.8.1, 40.8.1, and 41.0.0.

The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.
An attacker operating through local access may attempt exploitation with low privileges. If successful, the issue may cause the confidentiality, integrity or availability impact described by the vendor.

CVSS severity, EPSS forecast probability, public exploit material and CISA-confirmed exploitation are separate signals.
No CISA KEV match was present at the last successful refresh. This means no confirmation from that source, not proof of no exploitation.
No exploit-tagged reference or CISA SSVC proof-of-concept state is currently recorded. Research may still exist outside the structured feeds.
CWE-125: Out-of-bounds Read. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.
