Patch availableGit for Windows is the Windows port of Git. Versions prior to 2.53.0.windows.3 do not have protections that prevent attackers from obtaining a user's NTLM hash. The NTLM hash can be obtained by tricking users into cloning a malicious repository, or checking out a malicious branch, that accesses an attacker-controlled server. By default, NTLM authentication does not need any user interaction. By brute-forcing the NTLMv2 hash (which is expensive, but possible), credentials can be extracted. This issue has been fixed in version 2.53.0.windows.3.

The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information.
An attacker operating through a network path may attempt exploitation without authentication after a user interaction. If successful, the issue may cause the confidentiality, integrity or availability impact described by the vendor.

CVSS severity, EPSS forecast probability, public exploit material and CISA-confirmed exploitation are separate signals.
No CISA KEV match was present at the last successful refresh. This means no confirmation from that source, not proof of no exploitation.
No exploit-tagged reference or CISA SSVC proof-of-concept state is currently recorded. Research may still exist outside the structured feeds.
CWE-200: Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information.
